Stamps ride all over Alouettes

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Henry Burris threw four touchdowns and gained key yards with his legs as the Montreal Alouettes were porous defensively for a second straight week.

Top Performers

Henry Burris (CGY):   19-28, 412 yards, 4 TDs, 56 yards rushing

Anthony Calvillo (MTL): 17-33, 227 yards, 3 TDs, INT

Romby Bryant (CGY): 5 receptions, 146 yards, 2 TDs

Which team was struggling again?

Calgary (10-3) bounced back from two straight losses by shredding Montreal's defence. Burris was superlative a week after getting benched, and his receivers took his catches and added beaucoup yards as Als' defenders chased in vain.

Montreal (9-4) had come in on a winning streak, but carried over bad defensive habits from last week's win over Winnipeg. The Alouettes have allowed 86 points in the last two games.

Keys to the game

Can you say big plays?

Calgary had a number of big gainers, with Montreal defenders Billy Parker, Mark Estelle and De'Audre Dix suffering some cringeworthy moments they won't welcome revisiting in film session in the coming days. The first four of the following 25-yard plus plays for the Stamps occurred in the first quarter, and Calgary was off and running:

  • Romby Bryant, 61 yard touchdown reception.
  • Ken-Yon Rambo, 100 yard TD reception.
  • Jon Cornish, 28 yard kickoff return.
  • Joffrey Reynolds, 26 yard run.
  • Bryant, 26-yard reception.
  • Nik Lewis, 36-yard TD reception.
  • Bryant, 40-yard TD reception.

Cornish's return may not seem that  impressive, but he narrowly missed breaking it all the way.

More critically for Montreal, Damon Duval injured his kicking leg on that play. Duval ceded kickoff and extra point duties to Shea Emry and Ben Cahoon, respectively.

Duval was able to carry on punting duties, but then in the third collided on his followthrough with Keon Raymond.

The loss of the kicker affected Montreal strategically, with Marc Trestman conceding a safety in the second half he may not have with a healthy Duval in tow.

Later, Emry set up in punting formation and tried to run for a first down, but was stopped short of the yardstick.

The two teams will meet again on Oct. 11 in Montreal, and the Alouettes will hope Duval's injury isn't long term.

Numbers

Burris needed just 88 yards passing to move past Kent Austin for ninth spot on the CFL's all-time list.

Cahoon caught three passes for Montreal, leaving him three shy of tying Terry Vaughn's all-time mark of 1,006.

Calgary coach John Hufnagel has never lost three consecutive games in his CFL coaching career.
