Mookie Mitchell takes aim at Argonauts mark
Veteran receiver Derrell (Mookie) Mitchell learned Wednesday that he'll be in the starting lineup when the Toronto Argonauts host the Calgary Stampeders at the Rogers Centre (Thursday, 7 p.m. ET).
Mitchell, 35, rejoined the Argonauts on July 2 following three productive seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, who released him on June 23.
The import slotback starred for Toronto from 1997 to 2004, and still owns the franchise records for touchdown receptions (73) and 100-yard games (36).
Now he is aiming to break Paul Masotti's team mark of 8,722 receiving yards.
"I am more excited to be out on the field," said Mitchell, who needs 92 yards to surpass Masotti.
"I have been out the first two weeks of the season. Just sitting and watching from the sidelines is real frustrating because, as a player, you want to be out there, you want to perform and feel like you're a part of the team.
"But it [the record] is huge. It's something that, as a youngster, you just dream of one day having records in the sport that you're playing."
Mitchell, who has totalled 584 catches for 8,681 receiving yards as an Argonaut, is coming off a successful stint in Edmonton in which he caught 212 passes for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns in 51 games.
He had 70 receptions for 892 yards and a touchdown in 15 games with the Eskimos last season, only to be cut at training camp.
"Just the way this year unfolded for me, this is real special," Mitchell said of his second opportunity with the Argonauts.
Mitchell is competing in his 11th CFL season, having racked up 796 receptions for 11,648 yards and 89 touchdowns with Toronto and Edmonton.
