Armstead gets another CFL turn

The Edmonton Eskimos have signed veteran kick returner Jason Armstead.

The Edmonton Eskimos have signed veteran kick returner Jason Armstead.

Armstead appeared in 10 games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last season, recording 42 punt returns for 387 yards, 33 kickoff returns for 801 yards and one missed field goal return for 19 yards.

The 31-year-old was released by the Riders in the off-season, the move coming after he was arrested Feb. 13 in Pascagoula, Miss., on charges of auto burglary, possession of a stolen gun and felony evading police. The team said at the time his release was not related to his legal troubles.

The Mississippi native began his CFL career in 2004 with the Ottawa Renegades. He has also played in Hamilton, Montreal and Winnipeg.

"Jason Armstead is a bona fide CFL kick returner who can have an immediate impact at a critical time in our season," Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman said in a release Thursday.
