2 Eskimos earn CFL weekly honours

Two Edmonton Eskimos have been honoured with CFL awards following an overtime win over the B.C. Lions on the weekend.

Two Edmonton Eskimos have been honoured with CFL awards following an overtime win over the B.C. Lions on the weekend.

Eskimos running back Daniel Porter was named the offensive player of the week while kicker/punter Derek Schiavone earned special teams honours.

Porter had 21 carries for 171 yards to help Edmonton to a 31-28 win over the Lions on Saturday. The rookie also added one reception for 11 yards in the victory.

Calgary running back Joffrey Reynolds and Saskatchewan slotback Chris Getzlaf were also considered.

Schiavone, who was promoted to starter after the Eskimos traded veteran Noel Prefontaine to Toronto, recorded 11 points against the Lions. He went 3-for-3 in field goal attempts and added two converts. He also tallied 177 yards on five punts.

Calgary kick-returner Deon Murphy and B.C. kicker/punter Sean Whyte were the runners-up.

Hamilton defensive end Stevie Baggs was a unanimous selection as defensive player of the week after collecting seven tackles and two sacks in a 30-3 win over the Toronto Argonauts.

Getzlaf earned top Canadian honours after recording five receptions for a career-high 201 yards in a 34-26 loss to the Stampeders. The Regina native tied another career best with two touchdowns.

Montreal linebacker Shea Emry was the runner-up.
