Ward wins Suncor Cup while Americans claim BMO Nations' Cup

McLain Ward of the United States captured the Suncor Cup with a clean winning round aboard HH Carlos Z at Spruce Meadows on Saturday.

Ward finished in 55.11 seconds, ahead of Egypt's Sameh El Dahan (55.82), aboard WKD Diva, and Canada's Eric Lamaze, aboard Chacco Kid, both of whom went clear.

The American took home first place after posting a time of 55.11 seconds.

"You have an optional seven stride from the roll back to where the skinny was in the first round," Lamaze told CBC Sports of his second round.

"He [Chacco Kid] doesn't have the biggest stride. I was really in the middle and I couldn't decide if I could ride the seven. He's so careful and I think my track was fast but he just spends time in the air."

Americans claim BMO Nations' Cup

The American quartet of Beezie Madden, Lauren Hough, Charlie Jacobs and Lillie Keenan edged Brazil in a jump-off to win the BMO Nations' Cup later Saturday. 

Veteran rider Madden won the jump-off on Darry Lou in a time of 39.21 seconds, while Brazil's Pedro Junqueira Muylaert was just a step slower aboard Prince Royal Z in 39.75.

Beezie Madden captures the BMO Nations' Cup title for the U.S. after defeating Brazil's Pedro Junqueira Muylaert in a jump-off.

Both teams entered the jump-off with a combined eight faults.

Germany rounded out the podium with nine faults and Canada was fourth with 12. 

Canada saw strong performances from its veterans. Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar and Mario Deslauriers each pulled only a single rail through two rounds.

Ian Millar's terrific run caps off Canada's 4th place performance at the BMO Nations' Cup.

"It was just like the old days," said Deslauriers, who last competed for Canada in the BMO Nations' Cup at Spruce Meadows in 2006 before deciding to compete for the United States.

"I was a little nervous in the first round but the second round felt better and more relaxed. I was right back at home. It was exciting making my return at Spruce Meadows, and all the crowd made it so special."

Canada's youngster Ben Asselin struggled, collecting 16 faults in the opening round and adding eight more in the second round. Asselin was called up to the Canadian team on Thursday following the withdrawal of Keean White of Rockwood, Ont.
