Comedy legend starred as bowler, hoopster, 'looper'
With the Toronto International Film Festival celebrating Bill Murray Day, let's take a look at the comedy legend's best sports moments, both on and off the screen.
This has to start with 1980's Caddyshack, maybe the best sports movie ever made. When he wasn't hunting gophers, Murray's oddball groundskeeper Carl Spackler imagined himself as the "Cinderella story" of the Masters:
And told of his time as a "looper" for the Dalai Lama:
And introduced Chevy Chase's character to his "hybrid" grass:
Murray appeared in two sports movies released in 1996, most memorably as flamboyant bowling star Big Ern McCracken in Kingpin:
He also played opposite Michael Jordan in Space Jam, channelling (then seven-year-old) James Harden with the line "Whoa... I don't play defence."
Off the screen, Murray has entertained golf fans for years with his antics at pro-am events. Here he is at Pebble Beach in 2012:
