Unreserved

Tiny houses, many gifts and paying it forward

Unreserved brings you warmth and cheer as we celebrate the holiday season.

It's that time of year. Lots of snow, food, family and celebration.

On this week's show we've got nothing but love and celebrating good times.

Jason Burnstick and Nadia Gaudet have released a new album of lullabies, called Dream Big, Little One. The twist? They're singing in English, French and Cree. The gift? They dropped by the Unreserved studio for a special live performance.

Paschalina Nadli is paying it forward and spreading holiday cheer. Although she lives in Fort Providence, N.W.T., Nadli decided to send presents to kids in a community where she doesn't know anyone. She chose Sachs Harbour, that territory's most northerly community, located on Banks Island.

Idle No More's Alex Wilson says tiny houses are an affordable, sustainable way to make a dent in the First Nation housing crisis. (CBC)
They say home is where your heart is. But for many First Nations people homes are in short supply. Now a group known for starting a round dance revolution is putting their hearts into solving the housing shortage. A tiny house will be the ultimate holiday gift for a family in Big River First Nation, Saskatchewan.

Marilyn Shingoose knows what it's like to deal with hunger. Years ago, as a single mom, she had to turn to the food bank for help to feed her kids. Today she works at Samaritan House Food Bank in Brandon, Manitoba, and helps other families facing the same struggle.

If you find your travels taking you through Kamloops, B.C., you may want to pull in to the Painted Pony. On the menu you'll find Indian tacos, elk stew, deer steak, turtle burgers and bannock. The traditional food recipes were passed down from mother to daughter for generations.

And Unreserved heads east to celebrate a special occasion. Torngat Mountains National Park is marking its tenth anniversary. The park, in a distant corner of the country, highlights the ancestral lands and culture of the Inuit.
