What Frazey Ford is reading

Find out why she loves Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Frazey Ford is a singer-songwriter and a founding member of The Be Good Tanyas. She recently read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

"It was a fascinating story about a young Nigerian woman who moves to the United States to study. It compares the experience of being a young black woman in Africa versus coming to America and experiencing life as a black American. I thought it was a really interesting way to look at the race issues in the United States. It was also fascinating to get a glimpse into what the modern world looks like in Nigeria for a young woman today. I thought it was a brilliant premise. She ends up writing a blog about learning to think and see herself as a black American. One of the main things she said was when she was in Nigeria, she wasn't black, she wasn't an other, she was just herself. But when she came to the United States, she became black. What made me love the book was her character. She's razor sharp about what she had to say. I learned a lot. And she's a hilarious writer."
