Why musician Amy Millan loves Claudia Dey's novel Heartbreaker
Amy Millan is a Toronto-born indie rock singer and guitarist. She records and performs solo, and with the bands Stars and Broken Social Scene.
Millan is currently reading Heartbreaker and explains some of the many reasons she loves the book.
A story of similarities
"Right now I'm reading Heartbreaker by Claudia Dey. It's centred around a character named Billie Jean and it's told from three different points of view. It's a love story and it's about betrayal, heartbreak and forgiveness. Even though it's in a place called 'The Territory' with this people from a cult, it could be any small town. It could be about any group of people growing up together."
Building a mystery
"The other thing about this book that is that it's a mystery. It's a mystery of this woman who disappears. She kind of emotionally disappears before she physically disappears and you don't know why. It's about figuring out how all these people connect and what's going to unfold.
"The book title is apt because from the first page your heart feels slightly broken. The story unfolds so perfectly and mysteriously. And I didn't have any idea what was going to happen until the last page."
Amy Millan's comments have been edited and condensed.
