Sarah MacDougall is a Swedish-born singer-songwriter who is now based in Canada. She is known for her passionate performances and poetic lyrics her music is mix of rock, pop and folk elements.

MacDougall stopped by The Next Chapter to talk about the book she's currently reading: Nishga by Jordan Abel.

"Nishga is an autobiographical memoir by Jordan Abel. It's a beautiful book. It feels good to hold it in your hands. The whole package feels like a work of art. It invites the reader into Jordan's world: his history with his family, his father in particular, and the intergenerational trauma.

This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who's interested in learning about Indigenous history.

"It's a heavy book. He puts together with visual art and poetry and his own notes and court documents — reinventing the form of memoir in some ways. It's inviting and really vulnerable. It makes the reader feel a lot of emotions.

"This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who's interested in learning about Indigenous history and peoples in Canada and also people who are interested in visual art, poetry or stories about bravery and sorrow."
