Why Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara loved to read Emily Nussbaum's I Like to Watch
Tegan and Sara are an indie pop band formed in 1998 in Calgary, composed of identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin. The songwriting and multi-instrumentalist duo's ninth album Hey, I'm Just Like You and debut memoir High School were released in 2019. In 2020, they released the holiday song Make You Mine This Season for the soundtrack for film Happiest Season.
Sara stopped by The Next Chapter and talked about the book they are both currently reading: I Like to Watch by Emily Nussbaum.
"I'm a huge fan of Emily's writing in The New Yorker. I've read many of the pieces that are collected in the book, but what I loved about reading them again and having them all collected in one place isn't that it also did the thing that I think good writing should do — is compel you to get interested or watch the thing or listen to the thing that the person is writing about.
Tegan so happens to have the same book on her bedside table, which is not a twin thing. We just both really like TV and Emily Nussbaum.- Sara Quin
"Emily is writing about TV and how these shows have impacted not just television, but the way that we consume things, and the way that we see certain types of characters. For me, she's so bold. She's a feminist and smart and challenging and provocative in the ways that she writes about shows that are wildly popular.
