Why Alan Doyle loved reading Two-Man Tent by Robert Chafe
This interview originally aired on Dec. 24, 2018.
Alan Doyle is a musician and singer for the Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea. The native of Petty Harbour, N.L., is also the author of memoir A Newfoundlander in Canada, which explores his journey from leaving his hometown to discovering Canada for the first time.
He stopped by The Next Chapter to talk about the book he's currently reading, which is the short story collection Two-Man Tent by Robert Chafe.
"I just finished reading a book by my friend Robert Chafe from Newfoundland. His recent book is called Two-Man Tent. It's pretty cool: It's a bunch of stories that are interwoven around one central story that primarily takes place via text messages.
"The cool thing about the digital conversation these two people have is they're not sure what is going to happen next. Perhaps if it was happening in person, they'd be able to read each other's faces and read the body language. But because it's happening over text, there's so much that's unknown. I think that's so modern and current."
