Can Canada avoid sliding into recession?

This week on The House, the Finance Minister responds to forecasts that predict Canada is sliding into a recession. Economic indicators are painting a grim picture of the Canadian economy. Now the Bank of America is using the R-word, forecasting that once the numbers are in, they'll show Canada is already in a recession. What would that mean for the upcoming election campaign? Finance Minister Joe Oliver joins us for his assessment of the situation.

It would be a game-changer for parents traveling with infants and young children: making it mandatory for them to use of child-restraint systems when travelling by plane. According to the Transportation Safety Board, the goal would be to provide them with the same level of safety as adults. The Chair of the TSB Kathy Fox discusses the controversial recommendation.

Then, we zero in on two wild card ridings to watch for in the election — Newfoundland and Labrador's St. John's South-Mount Pearl and Avalon. The CBC's poll analyst Éric Grenier will join us throughout the summer to dive deep into the latest data and numbers in some key battlegrounds across the country. 

Avalon just happens to be the riding Ches Crosbie, son of Conservative legend John Crosbie, was hoping to run for — until the federal party rejected him as a candidate. John Crosbie is here to to react to his son's dismissal, and whether he sees a future for Conservatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Conservatives are recycling embarrassing, but old, stories. Justin Trudeau is making regular announcements. Panelists Mark Kennedy and Emmanuelle Latraverse analyze how the rise of the NDP is changing the dynamics of this pre-election season.
