As her time as host of The Current comes to a close, Anna Maria Tremonti looks back at some of her favourite conversations from the past 17 years.

In October 2016, she spoke with German director Werner Herzog about Into The Inferno, his documentary on volcanoes.

The 76-year German filmmaker has made more than 60 films in a career that is closing in on six decades. From films about cave paintings to grizzly bears, his work is famed for exploring how humans exists both in nature, and in conflict with it.

"I never made a film for myself. I'm not the one who would circle around his own navel," he told Tremonti.

"I always make films for audiences, however I do not know who they are. It's very amorphous and very strange."

Tremonti called it "one of the most illuminating discussions of [her] career."
