Today on The Current:

  • Brutally hot weather is gripping large parts of western and central Europe. A tour guide in Rome says she is keeping her trips to some of the ancient city's most popular sites inside until temperatures drop. While Canada hasn't roasted yet this summer, an extreme weather expert warns the spectre of heat waves across the country could more than triple by 2040.
  • Birdwatchers are working together for a common purpose. The eBird app, created by Cornell University's ornithology lab, lets users log their bird sightings. In fact, birdwatchers — armed with low cost and high quality technology — are adding millions of data points to help advance scientific research on everything from galaxies to radiation.
  • This summer, The Current is bringing you the best from CBC podcasts. We continue with Episode 5 of Uncover: The Village, which explores numerous cases of missing and murdered men in Toronto's gay community, dating back to the 1970s. Today, host Justin Ling traces Sandy Leblanc's steps from beloved brother with humble beginnings to well-known discoteque owner in the Gay Village's burgeoning club scene. When he's found dead in his apartment in 1978, rumours are rampant about who was responsible.
