The Energy of Slaves: Andrew Nikiforuk

When Calgary journalist and author Andrew Nikiforuk sees someone cutting the grass or washing clothes he sees servitude.

In his latest book, Andrew Nikiforuk makes the argument that the way we use and abuse cheap oil is equivalent to the practice of slaveholding. And like slave holders, we have morally and ethically compromised ourselves in our pursuit of an opulent lifestyle. What is needed, he says, is a new global abolitionist movement.

Andrew Nikiforuk has written about the oil industry for more than 20 years. His new book is called The Energy of Slaves: Oil and the New Servitude. He was in our Calgary studio.
