Former Conservative Senator Hugh Segal shares his view that Canadian conservatism is different from other Tory parties around the world -- something, he says, that is highlighted by his own advocacy for compassionate conservatism.

My Canada is the kind of country where trade unions and free collective bargaining make our economy stronger, and Canada a better place.- Former Senator Hugh Segal

Though his version doesn't always mesh with the prevailing wisdom, Mr. Segal knows the history of Canadian conservatism better than almost anyone.

He has championed labour rights, a guaranteed income supplement, and a strong social safety net...all part of what he sees as Canada's unique 150-year-old Tory tradition.

Former Senator Segal helped shape that history as an advisor to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Progressive Conservative Party Leader Robert Stanfield, and Ontario Premier Bill Davis. He has written about his experiences in numerous books.

He retired from the Senate earlier this month. Tomorrow he becomes the Master at Massey College at the University of Toronto.

To mark the occasion, we are airing our interview with Hugh Segal, which first aired on The Current on December 18, 2013, shortly after he announced his retirement.
