The British Columbia Trans Alliance is making the case at the BC Human Rights Tribunal that birth certificates should no longer specify a newborn's gender.

This would be a step beyond a previous decision which allowed gender on birth certificates to be changed later in life, at the person's request.

We hear from the Alliance's Morgane Oger, who says the gender designation has been used to discriminate against transgendered people. Columnist Barbara Kay weighs in with her thoughts as well, saying the case would send the wrong message.
