OPINION: Parents, don't tell your kids to 'dream big'

'Follow your dreams' and 'Find your passion' are phrases crafted to inspire us -- and in the language of parenting, this type of speak runs rampant. 

But does it really help kids?

Journalist Leslie Garrett says pumping up children with lofty, unrealistic dreams is dangerous for their future success.

If they've been told that anything is possible and then they grow up and discover that no they couldn't get on Broadway and no they couldn't get the recording contract, it's pretty much their fault if they didn't.- Leslie Garrett

Garrett says blind encouragement doesn't build self-esteem, it only tells kids failure is bad, and success is the only option. She says it's problematic when success is defined by unrealistic ambitions parents create for their children.
