OPINION: Embracing an Ecomodernist Manifesto

The environmental movement has long sent the message that humans hurt the planet, and the more economic and technological advances we make, the greater the damage we do.
A group of academics, activists and campaigners in the fields of physics, economics, sustainable development, climate science, and policy have written a new manifesto that says human prosperity and environmental destruction don't have to go together any longer.
In fact, it says we've already begun to "decouple" human prosperity and ecological degradation, and we can find ways to embrace our continued use of energy, without being the planet's downfall.

We affirm one long-standing environmental ideal, that humanity must shrink its impacts on the environment to make more room for nature, while we reject another, that human societies must harmonize with nature to avoid economic and ecological collapse.- The Ecomodernist Manifesto

We will hear from a Canadian signatory to the statement, called the Ecomodernist Manifesto.

David Keith is a Professor of Applied Physics in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Professor of Public Policy in the Harvard Kennedy School, runs a carbon capture company in Calgary. He's been a proponent of geoengineering to combat climate change, and has been was named one of Time Magazine's "Heroes of the Environment." 
He'll make the case for a new view of environmentalism, which would embrace and celebrate the Anthropocene, the "Age of Humans."
