Historian Declan Kiberd: Easter Monday is Ireland's Independence Day

One of Ireland's most respected historians and literary critics, Declan Kiberd, reflects on the heroism and romanticizing of the Easter Rising, and wonders whether the Ireland of today has fulfilled the rebels' vision for the Irish Republic.
Declan Kiberd, cultural historian, literary critic, host of "A Terrible Beauty: Culture and Revolution in Ireland" on RTÉ One ( RTÉ One)

Producer Chris Wodskou and Michael Enright travelled to North Dublin for a conversation with one of Ireland's most respected cultural historians and literary scholars, Declan Kiberd. He currently teaches Irish Studies at Notre Dame University in Indiana. And given Declan Kiberd's stature as a Joyce scholar, it was appropriate that they meet at the James Joyce Centre.

Among Professor Kiberd's many books is the award-winning, Inventing Ireland: The Literature of the Modern Nation. He is the host of a new documentary on RTÉ One in Ireland, called "A Terrible Beauty: Culture and Revolution in Ireland," looking at the role that artists and writers had in reinventing Ireland in the late nineteenth century.
