The Sunday Edition's own Icelander, David Gutnick, grew up on the prairies and in the Northwest Territories. He has lived in Quebec for more than 30 years. His first story for CBC Radio was about a group of Inuit teenagers who were billeted with families in Quebec City so they could go to school in French. Since then David has told thousands of stories, about people he has met all over the world.

David's work has been honoured with many awards. "Beethoven's Bust," a documentary about a young piano student and her teacher, won a gold medal at the New York Radio Festivals; "Jennifer's Diary" — which told the story of a homeless Montreal woman — won first prize from the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. In 2012, David's documentary "The Gristle in the Stew," about the lawsuit led by former patients of Ontario schools for compensation for the intellectually disabled, was honoured by The United Nations. It also won a silver medal at the New York Festivals and received a media award from the organization Community Living Ontario.

David has taught many courses about how to make a radio documentary. His favourite was in Fana, Mali, for Farm Radio International, a Canadian aid organization that helps African broadcasters use radio to improve the lives of farmers and their families.
David studied at Dalhousie University and graduated from l'Université Laval.
He and his wife Loreen Pindera, who is an editor with CBC News, live in Montreal, and are avid triathletes.
