The Sunday Magazine

Guest host Gillian Findlay

Gillian Findlay, host of CBC Television's investigative program, the fifth estate, is our guest host for The Sunday Edition on November 26.

We are delighted to welcome Gillian Findlay to The Sunday Edition as our guest host on November 26.

Gillian Findlay hosts and reports for CBC Television's investigative program, The Fifth Estate.

In the past eight years she has hosted episodes from Haiti, Afghanistan and South Korea. Recent investigations have included questions about Canada's purchase of the F-35 fighter plane, sexual abuse within the RCMP, the role of Quebec's social services agencies in the deaths of the Shafia family and why so many young Somali-Canadian youth are dying in Alberta. Findlay was also the reporter on the fifth estate's headline-making investigation into insider wins at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Her story on David Milgaard helped make the case for his innocence and against the man who was eventually convicted. Prior to that, she spent 12 years with CBC Television News, beginning as a general assignment reporter in Vancouver, working as a health reporter with the current affairs program The Journal and eventually becoming part of that program's prestigious documentary unit.

In 1991, she was named London correspondent for CBC News, covering the war in the former Yugoslavia, the famine in Somalia, the Persian Gulf War and its aftermath as well as historic elections in both Russia and South Africa.

In 1994, having moved to ABC television, she covered the war in Chechnya. Findlay spent eight years reporting for ABC News, first in Moscow and later from Jerusalem. As ABC's Middle East correspondent, she covered the Palestinian Intifada as well as events in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.

She returned to Canada and to CBC in 2002 to co-host the investigative program CBC News: Disclosure for two seasons before finally returning to her 'true journalistic home', The Fifth Estate.

Over the years Findlay has been nominated for more than a dozen Gemini awards, twice winning the award for Best Host/Interviewer. Her work has been recognized by the New York Film Festival, the Canadian Association of Journalists, Amnesty International, The Alliance for Women in Media and the Mitchener Foundation. While at ABC, she was nominated for an Emmy Award and was part of the ABC team that won a special Emmy in 2001 for the network's coverage of Sept. 11.

Gillian Findlay studied history and literature at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and holds a degree in broadcast journalism from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
