Kevin Patterson is a doctor and a writer; in 2007, he volunteered at a Canadian military hospital on the Kandahar Airfield base. He mined that experience for his new novel, News from the Red Desert. It was produced by Rachel Matlow; and is a winner at the 2016 Third Coast International Audio Festival. Viktor Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. His memoir, Man's Search for Meaning has sold in the tens of millions. We will hear from people whose lives were changed after reading the book -- including political prisoner Mohamed Fahmy, and Cold Play's Chris Martin. Our special hour, "The Meaningful Man", was produced by Cate Cochran. Elsewhere, a farewell to legendary folk musician Oscar Brand, and listeners' thoughts about unwanted, upright pianos.
