How should we define "intelligence"?

Artificial intelligence tends to make the headlines when it accomplishes tasks previously done by humans. Like writing pop songs, for example. That's because we still tend to be amazed when AI mirrors human intelligence. But one researcher thinks we can do better. Alex Taylor is a research scientist at Microsoft Research. He studies the relationship between technology and human social life.

Alex argues that modelling artificial intelligence on human intelligence is limiting. Instead, if we move beyond our existing view of human intelligence we'll come up with greater possibilities for AI. He imagines using artificial intelligence in ways that could extend our capabilities rather than confine us to the things we can already do.
