This 'smart' mobility cane recognizes your friends

A look at a prototype of a 'smart' mobility cane for visually impaired people.

This story first aired in June 2015.

XploR is a prototype of a 'smart' mobility cane for visually impaired people. Using facial recognition technology, it can alert the user when it identifies someone from the user's contact list, and even direct the user to where the friend is.

Co-designer Waheed Rafiq explains the features of the cane. We also talk to author Ryan Knighton, who is blind, about his reactions to the cane.
