On December 12, 1996, a neatly wrapped package arrived at the Greavette family's Moffat, Ont. farmhouse, where the D & L office was located.
It had been delivered to their mailbox by Canada Post.
Justin and then Wayne tried to turn on the flashlight, but nothing happened initially. Then Wayne sat on the couch, with Justin beside him, and tried the flashlight again.
This time it exploded and Wayne was killed instantly. Justin and Diane sustained minor injuries.
The nails and other materials packed into the flashlight exploded outward as shrapnel, and smashed through the floor, ceiling and drywall of the room.
They then collected the letter, wine box, packaging material, debris, and other items as evidence.
