In the time period around Sheryl Sheppard's disappearance, Michael Lavoie began a relationship with a woman named Sheila Darbyson.

The timing is odd, and the connection between Michael and Sheila even more so.

Sheila had been in a long-term relationship with Michael's step-brother Mark Dempsey.

According to Sheila, the relationship between her and Mark ended in October 1997, and she began reaching out to Michael to start an affair with him at that time.

Sheryl Sheppard went missing less than three months later, around January 2, 1998.

Sheila says that nothing happened between her and Michael until a few weeks after Sheryl's disappearance.
