What would we need to know to rebuild the world after an apocalypse?

If society were to collapse, what would you need to know to survive and to rebuild?  That's the question Dr. Lewis Dartnell, a research fellow at the University of Leicester, is attempting to answer in his new book. It's called, The Knowledge:  How to Rebuild the World from Scratch, and Dr. Dartnell conceives it as one part survival manual, and one part thought experiment into the basic science and technology that the modern world is built upon. Dr. Dartnell works through the basics of agriculture, of materials science, of simple electrical generation, medicine production, and even the basics of the tools and machines that we could use to reboot a modern world. Dealing with zombies or our new robot overlords, however, is left as an exercise for the reader.
