Quirks & Questions: Do other animals have different blood types?
Yes, as a matter of fact they do.
Dr. Shauna Blois from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph explains that familiar mammals like dogs and cats do have different blood types.
Dogs have 12 different types, although there is one that is most common. Cats have two main types, but in rare cases have a combination of the two.
Primates are known to have blood types that are similar both in number and actual type to that of humans. Just as in humans, knowing the blood type of a dog or cat for example, is critical in situations where blood transfusions are necessary.
