Was the search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 called off too soon?
On Tuesday of this week, it was announced that Australia, Malaysia, and China had officially suspended the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.
After nearly three years of scouring 120 thousand square kilometres of the Indian Ocean, the search has turned up about 20 pieces of debris. But in recent months, scientists have been able to narrow the search area significantly.
Dr. David Griffin, an oceanographer from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) explains that extensive modelling matching ocean currents with the location of debris, together with information gathered from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) buoys in the same location, have made the target site much smaller and further north of the previous search area.
Dr. Griffin remains optimistic that the search will resume and that MH370 will be found.
