One of the highlights of HBO's hit comedy Insecure is how good the black and brown actors look onscreen. The show plays with shadows, colour and light in a way that makes the characters pop and glow, and that's very rare for actors of colour who are often either washed out or cloaked in darkness on film.

Ava Berkofsky is responsible for elevating the cinematography on Insecure. She is the director of photography and she's been speaking out against Hollywood's poor lighting of people of colour. Today, she speaks to Tom Power about her tips and tricks to lighting non-white actors and why it's important to view these things not as a problem, but as a new standard.
