It's not a safe universe for Archie characters on new series Riverdale
Riverdale producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explains the new CW/Netflix series' dark twist on the classic Archie comics.
To catch up with the savvier teenage audiences of today, producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa knew he needed to do something different with Archie Andrews and his friends in the new CW/Netflix series, Riverdale.
This new take on the classic Archie comics is more Pretty Little Liars than Freaks and Geeks. "The show needed some genre element to fully dial in and make it undeniable," Aguirre-Sacasa explains.
So, drawing from examples like Stand By Me and River's Edge, Aguirre-Sacasa brought together "coming-of-age stories with loss-of-innocence stories," creating a darker version of Archie than anyone has ever seen. Aguirre-Sacasa warns: "This is not a safe universe."
