Andrew McCarthy went from a YA cinema star to an 'accidental' YA writer

You may remember Andrew McCarthy as a member of the Brat Pack, that cadre of '80s actors known for their edgy roles in films like Pretty in Pink, in which McCarthy starred with Molly Ringwald.

These days, McCarthy is an "accidental" YA writer and his latest book, Just Fly Away, began as an adult novel that he worked on for years, but didn't work until he started writing in the voice of a teenage girl.

It's not McCarthy's first book — he also wrote a best-selling travel memoir and he's an editor-at-large for National Geographic. When he's not writing, travelling or acting, McCarthy is frequently found behind the camera, directing episodes of shows like Orange is the New Black, Grace and Frankie, and The Black List. 

McCarthy talks to q about his new book, the new season of Orange is the New Black (which premieres June 9), and why he's made a career out of always finding some new path to pursue when it comes to his career.
