Saukrates is a Canadian hip-hop pioneer. In the mid '90s he was making inroads into the Toronto scene both at home and abroad, long before the city had attained its current level of renown.

His 1999 album The Underground Tapes incorporated the clout and musical proficiency that Saukrates had accrued as an MC and producer working with a slew of established artists south of the border.

The album was recently re-released with new bonus tracks and remixes. Saukrates stopped by q to talk with Tom Power about the legacy of The Underground Tapes, his classical training and being a connector for Drake in his early career.
