Lowell on her new LP Lone Wolf and what it takes to write a pop hit
When it comes to pop music, writing a catchy beat takes talent, but it takes extra skill to write the kind of song that packs a powerful message. Elizabeth Lowell Boland, who's better known by her stage name, Lowell, is exactly this kind of singer-songwriter. She makes pop music that's just as politically aware as it is catchy, and it can get pretty personal, too. On her first album, from four years ago, called We Loved Her Dearly, she wove in a lot of her own experiences: moving across the country from Calgary, heading to Toronto to study music and working as a stripper.
Lowell continues her personal songwriting on her new LP, Lone Wolf, which is out now. Today, she joins guest host Gill Deacon live in the q studio to chat about her new album and perform some songs at the piano. Watch her special acoustic performance of "No Talk" above and "Bitter Rivals" below.
