Why George R.R. Martin still hasn't finished The Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin's latest book is called Fire and Blood and it's out now — but it's not the book that fans were expecting or even wanted. Professor and TV critic Myles McNutt tells us why.

HBO's Game of Thrones is set to return for its final season next year, which means that the show is drawing to its inevitable conclusion. But what about the books that inspired the show? That's another story.

George R.R. Martin has written five books in his series A Song of Ice and Fire, and for the past seven years, he's been working on The Winds of Winter. So when fans heard that a new release from Martin was on its way in 2018, they got pretty excited. His latest book is called Fire and Blood and it's out now — but it's not the book that fans were expecting or even wanted.

Myles McNutt is an assistant professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He also writes about Game of Thrones for The A.V. Club. He joins guest host Saroja Coelho to unpack this story.
