This weekend in Ottawa, Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara Quin are being honoured with the prestigious National Arts Centre Award at the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards gala. The award recognizes Canadian artists who've accomplished big things by their mid-career.

The award is well-deserved. Tegan and Sara have been making music together for about 20 years so far. They've topped the charts, written songs across multiple genres, and appeared on huge TV shows and movie soundtracks. They've also launched their own foundation to support and empower women and girls in the LGBTQ community.

For Tegan and Sara, receiving an award like this is significant because over their career they've often been misunderstood about who they are as people, and about what kind of music they make or should be making.
