André Leon Talley on why dressing well is a moral code
Originally published on Jan. 18, 2018
André Leon Talley is the imposing, larger than life former editor-at-large for American Vogue. He's had a massive impact on fashion and appears often in television and film roles — usually playing himself — but he's rarely opened up about the barriers he faced on his way to the top.
A new documentary, The Gospel According to André, now delves into Talley's early life growing up Black, gay and fashion-obsessed in a relatively conservative southern environment.
Talley dropped by the q studio during the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival to speak with Tom Power about his life and why he believes we have a "moral code to dress well."
