How Drive-By Truckers' latest album unexpectedly became more relevant after the election
Drive-By Truckers open up about the unintended timeliness of their latest record, American Band.
When Drive-By Truckers wrote their latest record, American Band, they had the state of their country in mind.
They wrote about specific issues like Black Lives Matter, inequality, police brutality, school shootings and Islamophobia. They tackled all of this before Nov. 8.
Now, with Donald Trump as president of the United States, their album has gained some added relevance for at least the next four years. But, as member Mike Cooley remembers, he didn't think the songs would have any relevance by the time they released it in September of last year.
"Majority of the songs come from something bugging me," he said, of the songs' inspirations. "I wrote it for me."
