Kwan Yin finds father and daughter uniting in dance
Every family deals with disagreements in its own way. Some like to talk them out, others keep them buried deep inside, and in the case of the family you're about to meet, dance them out.
Choreographer Ziyian Kwan and her dad don't always get along and when Ziyian wanted to create a show about Buddhist ideas of emptiness and compassion, she thought a great way to do that would be to include her dad — her 77-year-old dad who's never danced professionally in his life. It was indeed a test of compassion for both of them.
That test turned into Kwan Yin, a dance performance that just premiered in Vancouver.
Today, both father and daughter discuss their experience, which wasn't always easy.
Kwan Yin runs from Feb. 22 to 25 at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver. For more information, head over to Firehall Arts Centre's website.
