Stephen Witt on a generation of pirates and 'How Music Got Free'

Today's culture of casually pirating music can largely be traced to three guys — one of whom literally tucked CDs, fresh from the pressing factory, into his belt buckle. 

That's just one story that blew Stephen Witt's mind as he researched his new book, How Music Got Free. 

Ever since Witt's own glut of pirated music gave him pause, he's been studying the massive shift that millions now take for granted. The author joins Shad to discuss the attitudes, technologies and timing that transformed the consumption of music, and whether the new normal is killing the industry.
