The Ashley Madison hacking scandal has been making headlines and breaking marriages — and it's even been potentially linked to two suicides so far, according to Toronto Police.

Some people see the hack and subsequent fallout as cheaters getting their just desserts. But sex advice columnist Dan Savage says the issue is much more complex than that.

Countless couples dealing with infidelity have written to Savage over the years for his column Savage Love, and he says that many situations "don't line up with the black-and-white narrative around adultery" we often subscribe to.

Instead, he calls for something that's been missing so far from most of the conversation around the hack: empathy.
