Have you always wanted to venture into the world of jazz, but didn't know where to start? Well let La La Land director Damien Chazelle, help you out.

We asked Chazelle to provide us with a gateway of sorts for newbies interested in getting into jazz, and below are the pieces he thinks will ignite a new found passion.

Count Basie, "Tickle Toe"

"I think there is no way for a human being to listen to the best 1930s Count Basie recordings and not get into jazz. It's just so infectious and it kind of reminds you that jazz was born as a dance music, it was born as a music of energy and vivacity and it's not this cocktail hour music that some people think it is."

Clifford Brown & Max Roach, "Delilah"

"It's so quiet and perfect and haunting and beautiful and simple, not over done. Clifford Brown is maybe my favourite trumpeter of all time because there is a simplicity to his playing that is just so pure and he is not inundating you with technique, it's really emotional."
