Hasan Minhaj still remembers the night his friend ditched him on prom night, accepting a corsage from another date as he stood on the sidelines in disbelief. That "doorstep moment" is now the crux of his one-man show, Homecoming King, which meditates on the joys and humiliations that shape us.

The comedian and actor — best known as a correspondent with The Daily Show and a Moth podcast storyteller — joins guest host Gill Deacon to discuss his adult reflections on the bigotry and bullying he experienced in his youth.

Minhaj works through to the universals in his personal narrative; like when he said, as a young boy, that he wanted to grow up to be white.

He now understands what he meant to say: "I want to be accepted."
