Brandi Carlile performs in studio q

Musician Brandi Carlile performs from her latest album, The Firewatcher's Daughter.

Creative freedom has led Brandi Carlile and her band to the highest charting record of their career.

It was a split from her old major label, plus becoming a parent, that transformed the singer/songwriter into a folk/rock/roots powerhouse on her new record The Firewatcher's Daughter.

The result is a vibrant and direct album that many are calling the best of her career: she and her longtime collaborators, twin brothers Tom and Phil Hanseroth, with Josh Neuman on piano, harmonize stunningly in studio q.

"Splitting with a major label can be a risk ... and scary," Carlile said about leaving Columbia, one of the biggest labels in the industry. The band released five albums with the label before breaking out on their own.
