Today on q, hosted by Tom Power:
1. The Oscar nominations are in!
The 2017 Oscar nominations are out now and q is on it — the winners, the losers, the surprises and the outrages. Host Tom Power gets into it all with Albert Shin, the young Korean-Canadian filmmaker behind the acclaimed feature, In Her Place, and Kiva Reardon, founder of the film journal Cléo.
The Oscars will take place live on Feb. 26 on ABC.
— Produced by Diane Eros
2. Johann Johannsson on scoring Arrival and the upcoming Blade Runner film
Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson has become Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's go-to source for original film scores, including the current alien language epic, Arrival. Johannsson talks about why his creative partnership with Villeneuve has worked so well and the challenges in reflecting and complementing a visual narrative through music. "We don't talk in musical terms, we talk in elemental, visceral terms," says the composer. Johannsson and Villeneuve's next big project is the upcoming Blade Runner film. "It's a film that has had a huge influence on me," Johannsson admits, noting that he watched the original in theatres.
Arrival is in theatres now. Blade Runner 2049 comes out on Oct. 6, 2017.
— Produced by Jean Kim
3. Steve Aoki's musical picks for EDM newbies
Steve Aoki is an expert when it comes to dance music. In 1996, he started Dim Mak Records, a label that has gone on to release music by dance artists such as The Bloody Beetroots, MSTRKRFT, Keys N Krates, Azari & III and The Chainsmokers throughout the years. Over time, dance music has taken on many forms. Nowadays, its most popular iteration is probably EDM — electronic dance music. "It's a global culture, a global community of people," Aoki explains. "They live and love by this kind of music." Some tropes come to mind when you think of EDM — festival flower crowns, neon-clad outfits, "the drop" — but Aoki is here to expand our preconceived notions of this celebrated genre. From Kraftwerk to The Chainsmokers, here is Steve Aoki's gateway to EDM. Below is a list of music that Aoki discusses in the segment.
Aoki's Grammy-nominated I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is streaming now on Netflix.
— Produced by Tyrone Callender
4. Caroline Dhavernas is a complicated killer on new TV series Mary Kills People
Canadian actor Caroline Dhavernas stars in a new series with a timely hook. It's called Mary Kills People and in it, she plays a doctor who provides assisted deaths. "She's filled with contradictions and grey zones," says Dhavernas of her character Mary. "She's leading this double life because she's an ER doctor trying to save people by day, and then she's moonlighting as this angel of death." The show explores the nature of assisted suicide and Dhavernas believes that it's important to be able to have these conversations. "When you talk about death there has to be levity," says the actor. "That's where the humour comes from, in the show, and it was really important to have it because it could have been a depressing subject matter."
Mary Kills People premieres on Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. ET on Global.
— Produced by Sarah Grant
