Angel Olsen sticks up for herself with My Woman

"I dare you to understand what makes me a woman."

When Angel Olsen named her latest album My Woman after the title of its ninth track, she didn't mean to make such a big statement. The song — which confronts a man with tough questions about gender politics — became the album's through line; an emblem of her transformation, personally and musically.

The album reflects Olsen's new attitude toward the work. The North Carolinian — who produced, mixed and directed the record — says she wanted to see more of herself in her music.

"At the end of the day I feel empowered," the genre-fluid musician tells guest host Candy Palmater.

"I'm looking forward to playing these songs in festivals and getting lost in them."
