The von Trapps: The hills are alive with the sound of indie

The next generation of von Trapps are still as musical as Maria and Captain von Trapp — but their sound is all their own.
Sofia, Melanie, Amanda, and August von Trapp are the real-life great grandchildren of Captain von Trapp and Maria (Ben Moon)

Portland indie band The von Trapps aren't making a wry reference to The Sound of Music — the indie rockers really are the great-grandchildren of Maria and The Captain, the family that inspired the classic movie musical and stage show.

Today Sofia, Melanie, Amanda, and August von Trapp join Shad to discuss taking family tradition in a new direction.

"There's two sides to the story," says Amanda Von Trapp. "You have the Von Trapps — the history that we grew up with as members of the actual family — and then you have The Sound of Music, that is this very public story that everyone feels very close to and connected with."

She notes that the siblings often dance between the two.

"The Sound of Music is a film about our family, but the Von Trapps still have their story."
