Frontier brings a piece of Canadian history to TV

Frontier stars Jason Momoa and Allan Hawco discuss the new Netflix and Discovery Canada series.

Frontier is bringing a familiar Canadian history lesson to life on our TV screens.

The show, Discovery Canada's first original scripted series which will also be distributed by Netflix, retells the story of the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. Exploring the many perspectives at the time, from Europeans to the Indigenous tribes they conflicted with, Frontier hopes to merge action with education.

"How has this country not tackled this before?" producer and star Allan Hawco (Republic of Doyle) remembers, when he first read the script. He adds that it was important to shoot this show here, where the history took place: "We have an industry here and we're committed to making shows that are set in England or America — why can't we shoot them in Newfoundland, Labrador?"

For Momoa (Game of ThronesBatman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice), who plays a half native/half English character on the show, it was crucial for him to, in his words, "get it right." While Momoa didn't learn as much about the fur trade down in the U.S., he does treat the integrity of this show's portrayal of history with the "utmost importance."
